The place i lived at 10 years ago was in bushland, where the POTS wires ran through a swamp for about 3 kilometres. I was getting line faults about every 3 months. Back then you could adjust the signal passband and modulation in ADSL modems for various situations (wide bandwidth and high symbol rate + low FEC overhead rate for good lines, etc.) One time I had to really max up the forward error correction and drop the symbol rate to its minimum, as the ~1.5MB/s connection dropped to _7kB/s_. Reported the fault. The tech fixed it, and said that one of the wires in the twisted-pair had broke.
Yet, I was still getting Internets from one wire, with the return circuit through 3 kilometres of wet dirt.
