Might be related to a small delay between requesting a tok from tikwm and the actual file being available to download, or maybe the server is getting rate limited, I'll look into it.

Aight gents. I think it's down to the file format. The original uses the QT file format (major_brand qt), while both my libx265 transcode and simple remux change it to ISO base media format (major_brand isom). So, in other words, a simple remux "fixes" the thumbnail issue. It uses practically no additional resources and can be done instantly even on potatoes (annoying nonetheless). Example remux:

A remux is not a transcode, the original video bitstream stays the same, only the container changes, so yeah, you may safely delete the original (so long as you don't have any attachments to the qt file format).

What you are referring to by "conversion" is a transcode where you re-encode the original bitstream using a different codec, which results in a new bitstream. This obviously affects data and costs quite a bit of your computing resources. The remux, on the other hand, costs practically nothing as you are not encoding anything. (lastly, the firefox thing is mostly a microshaft winblows fuckup. hevc files played fine on firefox linux for a long time)

Oh for sure. But for now, this is a more than adequate solution, given how it is quick and easy to do. (Before I had realised this, I was also working on a userscript which used ffmpeg.wasm to literally load every single offending upload and extract a frame to be used as a thumbnail. It should be obvious that this would've caused considerable trouble as every single access/page reload would both use lots of resources client side, but also bandwidth server site)
