Drones reportedly target Russian oil refinery in Ufa, more than 1,300 kilometers from Ukraine
October 15, 2025 4:39 pm

A drone struck an industrial area in the Russian city of Ufa where one of Bashkortostan’s largest oil refineries is located, the Telegram channel Astra reported on Oct. 15
The Ufaorgsintez refinery is part of the Bashneft oil company, which is affiliated with Russia’s state-owned energy giant Gazprom.

According to Astra, local residents reported seeing smoke near the city’s industrial zone and experiencing disruptions to mobile internet service.
Russian authorities had earlier declared a drone threat in the region and implemented emergency measures at Ufa airport.

Ufa, the capital of Russia’s republic of Bashkortostan, lies roughly 1,300 kilometers (820 miles) from the Ukrainian border.
If confirmed, the incident would mark the third Ukrainian drone strike in Bashkortostan in the past month.

On Sept. 24, a Ukrainian security source told the Kyiv Independent that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) had struck a Bashkortostan oil facility for the second time in a week.
Elsewhere, a drone attack was also reported in Volgograd overnight on Oct. 15, according to local Telegram channels. Residents claimed that an oil refinery had been hit.
Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil infrastructure deep inside Russia, using long-range drones in an effort to disrupt Moscow's ability to finance and supply its war effort.

Published: Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 17:51 UTC

On its way back to Washington, an US Air Force Boeing C-32 has declared an emergency.
A flight, with callsign SAM153, carrying U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has been forced to declare an emergency after a depressurization issue mid-flight, according to reports from multiple sources.

The Boeing C-32A, a military version of the Boeing 757, was en route from Brussels, Belgium, where Hegseth had been attending NATO meetings when the crew declared an emergency while starting to cross Atlantic.

The aircraft, which serves as a transport for senior U.S. military and government officials, was about 30 minutes into its flight when the depressurization issue was detected. The Boeing aircraft descended to 10,000 feet.

In first since Oct. 7 massacre, IDF reopening beach near Gaza border
OCtober 15, 2025 11:13 am

For the first time since the October 7, 2023, onslaught, the IDF is reopening Zikim Beach near the northern border with the Gaza Strip to the general public.

Following a fresh assessment, the military says IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir approved a recommendation by the Southern Command to reopen Zikim Beach to the public, in coordination with the regional council, and remove a closed military zone imposed on the area since the start of the war.

The beach will reopen tomorrow, the army says.

The IDF says the move was made possible “following significant operational activities” in the northern Gaza Strip area and preparations by the Southern Command and Navy.

On the morning of October 7, 38 Hamas terrorists in seven speedboats set out from the Gaza Strip. Some of the terrorists reached the beach area, where they killed 17 civilians and one soldier.

Afghan Journalist Killed, Another Injured In Pakistani 'Drone Attack' Near Border Ahead Of Temporary Ceasefire
October 15, 2025, 10:47 PM IST

A journalist was killed and another was injured when Pakistani forces opened fire near the Durand Line in Afghanistan’s Khost province, according to the local media.
The two were covering retaliatory operations by Afghan defense forces in the Palotso area of Zazi Maidan district when the attack occurred.
There are speculations that the journalist lost his life in a drone attack from across the border.

As per reports from Pajhwok Afghan News, the slain reporter has been identified as Abdul Ghafoor Abid from Paktia National Radio Television.
His colleague Tawab Arman was injured and later evacuated by Afghan forces. Efforts were initiated to retrieve the dead body of Abid.

Abdul Ghafoor Abid was reportedly killed in Pakistani drone attack and there are also reports that two of his colleagues have suffered injuries in the attack. However, the number of injured colleagues is not clear yet.
Abid's dead body was retrieved from the Zazimidan district of Khost province and was later brought to Paktia, where many people were present to receive the dead body of the martyred journalist.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have recently agreed on a temporary ceasefire of 48 hour.
According to a statement from the Taliban government, the ceasefire will begin from 5:30 PM (local time) and is to be observed “until such time as no aggression has been committed.”

Pakistan Insisted For Truce
The agreement was reached “at the request and insistence of Pakistan,” Taliban spokesperson Zabehulah said.
Under the ceasefire, both sides are expected to halt hostilities and pursue dialogue to resolve ongoing conflicts.
Pakistan, in its own statement, said that the pause in fighting would allow “sincere efforts” toward finding a positive solution to the escalating cross-border disputes.

Negotiations
The outbreak of violence and the killing of a journalist highlight how volatile the Durand Line region has become.
The ceasefire, although temporary, may offer a brief respite and opportunity for negotiation between the two countries.

RSF drones attack military sites in Khartoum for second day
15 October 2025

October 15, 2025 (KHARTOUM) – Drones attacked Sudanese army sites in the capital Khartoum for a second straight day on Wednesday, residents said, as explosions and anti-aircraft fire rocked the city at dawn.

Witnesses said the army’s anti-aircraft defences engaged more than 10 drones for over an hour in a military area north of Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city.

Residents in Omdurman reported hearing powerful explosions before sunrise, with smoke later seen rising from the Sarkab military area.

A military intelligence camp in the Kadro suburb, north of Khartoum Bahri, was also targeted, according to field sources.

The extent of any damage or casualties from the Wednesday attacks was not immediately clear.

There was no immediate comment from the Sudanese army, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) did not officially claim responsibility.

The latest strikes followed attacks on Tuesday that targeted residential homes east of Khartoum and a military site in the city of Al-Dabbah in northern Sudan, killing a total of seven people.

UN condemns Russia drone strike on aid convoy
October 15, 2025 12:11:05 pm

The UN on Tuesday condemned a Russian drone strike on one of its convoys delivering aid to Bilozerka, a town 9 kilometers from the front line in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine.

The UN stated in a press release that an “inter-agency convoy” of four trucks carrying hygiene kits, medicines, and shelter materials was attacked by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on Tuesday. “Intensive artillery fire started” while supplies were being offloaded. Two of the trucks, marked as belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP), were targeted by “first-person-view drones” and set on fire. There were no injuries or casualties.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Ukraine posted a video on X showing the aftermath of the attack.

The Assistant Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, stated that “[d]eliberately targeting humanitarians and humanitarian assets is a gross violation of international humanitarian law and might amount to a war crime.”
The Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, described the attack in an X post as, “[a]nother brutal violation of international law, proving Russia’s utter disregard for civilian lives and its international obligations.”
He called on UN member states to condemn the attack.

Attacking humanitarian aid is prohibited under international law. Article 71(2) of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Convention states that relief personnel “shall be respected and protected.”
Article 8(2)(b)(iii) of the Rome Statute categorizes “[i]ntentionally directing attacks against personnel, installations, material, units or vehicles involved in a humanitarian assistance or peacekeeping mission” as a war crime.

The UN reported that nearly 30% of all casualties in Ukraine in September were caused by “short-range drone attacks.”
The Donetsk and Kherson regions have had particularly high casualties, comprising the majority of the 214 civilians killed and 916 injured in September.
Russia has been extensively criticized for its strikes on civilian populations in the conflict with Ukraine.

Amid European drone incursions, ammo maker Nammo beefs up security: CEO
October 15, 2025 10:05 am

Norwegian-Finnish manufacturer Nammo, one of Europe’s major producers of ammunition, is taking additional measures to protect company production sites and supply chains in response to critical infrastructure threats that have put Europe on high alert, according to the company’s CEO.
Like “some of our [other] Western companies, we are focused more and more on security of our production sites in all kind of forms,” Morten Brandtzæg told Breaking Defense Tuesday.
“We are focusing on the security of our personnel. We are making sure that we have robust supply chains and that we have a solid raw material situation.”

He added that based on what “we hear from many local intelligence sources,” Nammo “must be prepared more in the future to protect our production assets.”
The uplift to production base security measures have not involved “extremely costly” investments, said Brandtzaeg, though he did not disclose how specific changes have been implemented.

A spate of Russian drone incursions across Europe along with other uncrewed aerial system sightings disrupting critical infrastructure, including several airports, has led to NATO bolstering its presence on the Eastern Flank.
Additionally, the European Union has floated a drone wall initiative, involving a multi-layered, ground-based air defense approach that leans heavily on counter uncrewed aerial system (C-UAS) capabilities.

“The most important thing we produce” for the C-UAS market is air burst ammunition, said Brandtzæg.
“We will see a multiple of technologies” take on greater significance going forward, “anything from jamming to changing the direction of it [drone aircraft] to taking it down in all different phases of the flight and so on.”
Regarding other business, Nammo is set to sign a highly lucrative and long-term ammunition contract with a Nordic nation by quarter one 2026, Brandtzæg revealed.

“An example for a possible artillery contract for a Nordic country typically is worth about 1.5 billion euro [1.74 billion USD]” he said.
The new deal follows on from a strategic partnership agreement struck between Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden in June, opening the way for a triple production rate of ammunition from the four nations.

And in the US, Nammo broke ground last week on a new motor rocket facility in Perry, Fla.
“The ambition for us is to continue to supply our prime [industry customers] in the US with our rocket motor competence and in order to do that in a good way, we are investing $200 million” of internal funds, said Brandtzæg.
RTX’s Raytheon awarded Nammo and Northrop Grumman contracts in April that could let them each build out Mk72 solid rocket motor production lines.
The US Navy relies on the Mk72 for initial thrust on its Standard Missile, but industrial base constraints have led to a push for new sources of solid rocket motors — beyond L3Harris — the current Mk72 manufacturer.

Grand Forks Air Force Base to host new counter-drone battle lab
Oct 15, 2025 / 09:45 AM CDT

Two new counter-drone initiatives are coming to the Grand Forks region, Senator John Hoeven announced Tuesday, at the start of the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Summit.

The U.S. Air Force has chosen Grand Forks Air Force Base to host its new Point Defense Battle Lab.
The lab will focus on testing and developing technologies to protect military sites from small drone threats.
Details about its operations are still being finalized, but the lab is expected to work closely with existing regional efforts like Project ULTRA.

In addition, defense technology company AeroVironment is installing its AV Halo system at GrandSKY, a nearby UAS business park.
The system includes Titan radar for wide-area surveillance and software that helps detect and track drones.
AV Halo will support both the new battle lab and Project ULTRA’s research.

Hoeven said the developments strengthen the region’s role in advancing drone and counter-drone capabilities.

US Army Rolls Out Soldier-Built Tactical Drone With Rapid 20-Minute Build
15 October 2025

The US Army’s 101st Airborne Division is moving fast to bring small-unit drone innovation to the battlefield.
Its newly established Robotics and Autonomous Integration Directorate (RAID) has introduced the ABE 1.01, a modular, low-cost unmanned aircraft system (UAS) built to let soldiers take direct control of battlefield tech.

At around $750 per unit, the ABE 1.01 is a fraction of the cost of comparable commercial drones, which typically average $2,400.
Its modular frame can be assembled in roughly 20 minutes, allowing for quick field repairs and mission-specific configurations.

Each system is built at Fort Campbell using US-made components sourced through the Defense Innovation Unit’s Blue UAS framework to ensure trusted, secure operations.
Currently optimized for reconnaissance and surveillance, the ABE 1.01 may soon see expanded roles as the RAID plans to submit it for review and approval to carry lethal payloads, including the military-grade plastic explosive C4.

Training and Future Potential
Conceptualized by Brig. Gen. Travis McIntosh, the RAID acts as the division’s central hub for weaving robotics, autonomy, and AI into daily operations.
In partnership with EagleWerx, Emerging Tech, and Force Integration, the directorate supports the broader push to stay ahead in Large-Scale Long-Range Air Assault missions.
To develop operator expertise for the ABE 1.01, the RAID launched the Purpose Built Attritable System Academy at Fort Campbell — an eight-day, 40-hour course on deploying, controlling, and maintaining the new drone.

While primarily aimed at infantrymen with prior experience, the program is open to soldiers from other specialties.
The training emphasizes drone reconnaissance and kinetic effects in a controlled environment, ensuring soldiers gain safe, repeatable, and mission-relevant skills.

Looking ahead, the RAID plans to expand beyond small drones to include loitering munitions, launched effects, and AI-driven ground robotics.
“The future of the RAID is not set in stone; we will listen to the commander and soldier feedback on the ground,” said McIntosh.
“We envision RAID to fully integrate autonomous and AI systems, whether delivered by the Army or manufactured in-house.”

World’s first humanoid robot deploys drone that drives and flies from its back
Updated: Oct 15, 2025 04:37 AM EST

he California Institute of Technology, also known as Caltech, has introduced the ‘world’s first’ multi-robot system that combines a humanoid robot and a transforming drone to walk, fly, and drive in synchronization.
The X1 System integrates multiple locomotion modes like walking, flying, and driving into one coordinated robotic system that can seamlessly adapt to complex terrains and tasks.
The team developed this system over three years in a collaboration between Caltech and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), Abu Dhabi.

The main aim behind building this system is to integrate all the available locomotion modalities in a single package to mitigate each machine’s drawbacks and downfalls.
The broader vision was to build adaptive and reliable autonomous systems that can perform real-world missions- from emergency response to urban navigation – without human control.

Decoding the X1 system
The X1 system consists of two components for building the system.
The first is a modified Unitree G1 robot that can walk and carry heavy loads. The second is the M4 multimodal robot that can fly and drive as and when required.
The Unitree G1 carries this M4 robot like a backpack and can launch it in two locomotion modes. The M4 was developed by Caltech’s Center for Autonomous Systems and Technologies (CAST).

“We install different kinds of sensors—lidar, cameras, range finders—and we combine all this data to understand where the robot is, and the robot understands where it is to go from one point to another,” said Claudio Tortorici, director of TII.
“So, we bring the capability of the robots to move around with autonomy,” he continued.

Director of CAST, Aaron Ames, also revealed the final details in modifying the G1 humanoid, stating there was more to it than what met the eye during the demonstration.
He stressed the importance of operating humanoids without human reference, unlike how they usually learn human movements through captured data.
“If we want to really deploy robots in complicated scenarios in the real world, we need to be able to generate these actions without necessarily having human references,” he argued.

Caltech’s demo
The team carried out a demonstration at Caltech’s Pasadena campus. To demonstrate its ability, the humanoid walked through the corridors into an open area.
To begin with, the humanoid bent forward and launched the M4 from its back in a drone mode.

Then, this multimodal robot soared over obstacles and later transformed into a wheeled vehicle to continue its journey.
When it encountered the campus’s Turtle Pond, it seamlessly switched back to flight, crossed the water, and resumed its mission.

“The challenge is how to bring different robots to work together so, basically, they become one system providing different functionalities.
With this collaboration, we found the perfect match to solve this,” said Mory Gharib, CAST’s founding director. In doing so, the system displayed impressive adaptability across environments.
The X1 project united Caltech’s Ames Lab for locomotion control, CAST’s Gharib Group for M4’s design, TII for autonomy and onboard computing, and Northeastern University for morphing mechanics – creating a seamless integration of walking, flying, and driving robotics.

A vision for the future
For the Caltech-TII team, the next goal is to enhance the qualities of this system in terms of adaptiveness and usefulness for real-world deployment.
“We’re thinking about safety-critical control, ensuring we can trust these systems,” said Ames.
“By working together on projects like this, we’re taking meaningful steps toward making autonomy truly robust,” he added.
