This episode was an alright episode, I liked it. I had moments where I related to both Sweetie Belle and Rarity. Though not by much (barely a year) I am the older sibling and thus had the more responsible personality. When Rarity was trying to control things like a neat freak and taking command of things personally because she knew what she was doing, yeah, I felt that. But I also related to Sweetie Belle heavily in the one scene where she was trying to put the parsley on the eggs with Rarity correcting her and arguably causing or at least contributing to that last little mishap; I'd often have adults take stuff away from me when I was trying to do a task if I didn't get it right away and keep over instructing me/giving me conflicting instructions in some cases. I found it easier to learn things alone, without prying eyes, at least when it came to stuff like knots. So, small scene but +1 for relatability. 

I stress this episode is an alright episode in the sense I don't have anything that stood out as remarkable that I enjoyed but I think it is above serviceable and has a good lesson. One that might have had a positive impact on some people. Rarity and Sweetie Belle's dynamic doesn't feel like some other shows where the younger sibling is completely insufferable and Sweetie Belle is purely navie over being a pest (I suppose if I wanted to be nitpickish, Rarity's parents might slightly suck in the regard, albeit they are slightly navie stupid cartoon parents stereotype)  If I had to pick a favorite moment,I don't have one, but my favorite part would be the middle when Sweetie Belle is seeing Applejack and Apple Bloom's relationship and comparing it with her own and Rarity's while Rarity comes around to seeing the error of her ways.   

My final rating, 6.5/10. I will note I debated on doing this or 6/10, if only because I think somewhere in my head I still rate things partly over quality or personal enjoyment (sometimes I'd rate something like a 6.5, but enjoy a flat 6 more). So, as usual, still trying to figure out the whole rating thing. 

'Odds and Ends: Mini Edition!
Rarity's Parents 
Pardon my memory, but is this the first speaking lines from any of the Mane 6's parents? My rating of them is that they are okay, could be a good contrast/dynamic with Rarity but also could be slightly annoying depending on how they are used.

Parallax Effects and Camera Shots
It maybe just me but they had lots of zooming around, attempting to have rotating effects, and the parallax effects this episode and they seemed more prominent than normal. The show has always used effects like this some, but it almost seems overboard here. Case in point, vid: 'Odd PanningShot' when it transitions from Rarity looking at Sweetie Belle's art project to backing away. The middle section has attempt of a rotating effect that feels out of place for how short it is.

This review was on the shorter side but truth be told I can make any review longer if given enough time to think on it. For whatever reason I like this review compared to previous attempts I've made at shorter reviews and I can't tell you why.

And I think the case above shows that I can overthink stuff too, albeit this camera  effects stuff is a more mild example as it doesn't bug me so much as I find it mildly distracting. I don't reject at all you overthinking it. It can be /fun/ too and it's nice to see a different perspective.

In the cold open, when Sweetie Bell burns breakfast, we hear a beeping like a smoke alarm, and nearer the end of the episode we hear the same again when Sweetie Bell burns more cooking. If we were, just momentarily, to assume this wasn't just a thematically-appropriate sound effect, I think you probably could in this world invent some sort of smoke detector with magic, and it would be one of the more important inventions to make in this world. Fires were a scourge before the modern era, with so many buildings being made of wood and other flammables, and with relatively ineffective fire-fighting. They were incredibly difficult to keep from spreading, which is part of why the US firebombing of Japan, a country that still at that time had mostly wooden structures populating it, was so incredibly destructive. So, something like this would be incredibly important for the semi-renaissance world of Equestria - I would be prepared to accept either explanation, that it is a smoke alarm or that it is just an illustrative sound effect. 

Rarity and Sweetie Belle's parents humour Sweetie Belle's efforts at cooking breakfast in a way that strikes me as potentially good parenting. They give positive encouragement of her efforts, which is great, although she could perhaps use some constructive criticism. And like her older sister, Sweetie Belle packs quite a lot of luggage! As Rarity prepares a new breakfast herself, Sweetie Belle becomes increasingly desperate to help out. A curious thing with children is that they have this desire to help and to 'really' help, yet they don't quite seem to understand that finding a way for them to 'help' actually, usually, just increases the length and difficulty of the task with an additional vector. It is awkward to sit and wait, however, and with some skill it's possible to make people feel as though they are helping out (although in such cases they are almost always, in fact, doing precisely the opposite). I think the real complaint is not that they are not being 'of help', but rather, that they are not being included, and that they feel left out. This very much seems to be Sweetie Belle's issue this episode, and it's appropriate that as a child, she struggles to articulate that beyond wanting to help. 

On the other hand, Rarity doesn't realise that all these problems Sweetie Belle is causing for her are just stemming from Sweetie Belle being desperate to spend time with her. It's difficult because Rarity is working hard at her job, but ultimately it would probably be worth the investment of some time with Sweetie Belle just so she'd be content enough to not run around looking for things to do and inevitably ruin something in the process. Sweetie Belle also expresses being bored, so having something to do together and something for Sweetie Belle to do on her own would have worked a treat, and further, Sweetie Belle is actually a fairly undemanding child in this regard, she does not seem especially picky about what activities she'd want to do. It wouldn't be too difficult to come up with something, although again, it would inevitably require some time, which takes away from Rarity's work. Interestingly, this almost makes it seem as though her parents are better with Sweetie Belle than with her. It is a little unfair, when they know their daughter runs her own business, to arrive without announcement to drop Sweetie Belle off, before Rarity's even woken up no less, and let Sweetie Belle run amok in their daughter's kitchen without permission from Rarity first. At the very least they haven't made things any easier.

Seeing Applejack and Apple Bloom's relationship as sisters is fantastic, it's a great demonstration of how the Apple family's oft-stated family-values work in practice. It's also the perfect comparison for this episode, because just like Rarity, Applejack also runs a business, one she arguably has to work even harder for compared to Rarity: we often hear and see in the series about the financial difficulties that the farm is going through, whereas Rarity's boutique incurs significantly less costs than a large farming operation, and would be easier to turn around in a downturn. Applejack manages to balance hard work with making time for her family, in other words, even though between the two of them, Applejack would probably have the better excuse, all things considered, for not having time for such things. 

The sheep being herded into the enclosure saying that they could have just asked is something that would take too long for me to overthink and it would go into way too much detail, so I'm just going to gloss over it. For the sake of moving along with things, and for my sanity, I'm just going to assume that just that one sheep could talk, or learned Ponish, or something, for the sake of a silly gag joke. 

When Rarity realises her mistake and comes to find Sweetie Belle, and Sweetie Belle disparages the idea of coming back home with Rarity so that they can do the things that Rarity wants to do, it's interesting to me that Sweetie Belle would probably, earlier on, have been quite content to do the things that Rarity wanted to do. It is a good objection on Sweetie Belle's part, and I think original thinking for her, as I doubt Apple Bloom has much of a choice in terms of the work she does on the farm. Although, in fairness, maybe having marshmallows was Apple Bloom's idea. It's honestly a rather expedient way of demonstrating the give-and-take in such things: if you're willing to invest your time in someone else, then they're more willing to invest time into things you want to do, but since Rarity has demonstrated an unwillingness to invest her time into Sweetie Belle, the exchange breaks down.

There is very little I can add to the rest of the episode: it is perfection, absolute perfection. A clever underlying theme throughout the episode, which would have already been presumed without it being woven in but which nonetheless helps out, is Rarity's aversion to mess, disorder and getting herself dirty. That, combined with what we've already learned of Rarity's character in the show, makes what she puts herself through with the mud, the race itself, and even wearing Applejack's potentially unfashionable hat, it's sincerely powerful stuff to see Rarity make this sort of self-sacrifice for Sweetie Belle. As in, powerful enough to make me tear up a little. It's such a genius resolution, it ties everything together from the episode so excellently, so neatly, and exemplifies the lesson beyond even the simpler words that the conclusion with Spike and the letter to Celestia puts it in. This is the kind of sacrifice one should be willing to make for others, and that's something which is more powerful through seeing the lesson lived out, than merely described. 

The episode to me is largely a set-up for the conclusion, for that race at the end, but it builds up towards it so well that I think that's really the point. So, I would say it's one of those interesting episodes where it's not 10/10 throughout, but the conclusion is so worth it that I am tempted to call it perfect overall. I really can't think of anywhere where I'd say something should have been done differently. I have to really grasp at straws to think of anything - the sheep slightly irked me, but it was a funny joke and I understand that it's literally just me being me that's somewhat, well, not even bothered by it as such but pricked with the tiny little needle of the temptation to overthink to such an extent that I forget about the rest of the episode! Maybe Rarity's parents being somewhat unfair? I don't think they're being all that bad about things really, beyond just not telling Rarity in advance. They're in their rights to ask that Rarity look after Sweetie Belle, I think, it's just that they ought to do exactly that: ask. So with score, it just comes down to that comparison to other episodes: Winter Wrap-Up is my 10. This is similarly perfect, like that episode, but WWU is just a bit comfier, just slightly more rewatchable, and blows me away with parts just that little bit more. So, I'm going with 9.9! Fantastic episode.

There was a fanfic, many years ago. Written after S2 started because it indirectly referenced, explained, lesson zero.

We find out much later, that Twilight was a golem made by Celestia, to accept the darkness from Luna, and be sacrificed, killing NMM forever.

But Tia fell in love with the "foal" - for it had to be raised as if it were a pony, to be capable of accepting a pony-soul, or whatever exactly the darkness that took over Luna was called by.

So she severed the magical link forcing a golem to love its maker, and found a couple, foalless, formerly of her employ, to raise the "foal"

I'd thought this first image was made as an homage to that 'fic, so when I had cause to try to remember the name of it, I went looking - oh! so much art from JJ. Not the style, so much, that was influential, but the ideas all seemed to be there on the page.

Just generic enough we could put ourselves into what was made, I guess.

Why does this come up? I was in a cytube room that had this music video, very recently made. Its interpretation of Flutts as a low-key villain put me in mind of the time Twilight's magic was bound by a safeword only Celestia and Spike knew -- in case she lost the ability to discern reality again.

So, I wondered if anyone had celebrated that AU with music, but I can't remember it. Do any of you know about the time unicorn-Twiley was disturbed by Rarity's macabre curtains of death, and continued down the spiral until she elevated herself to godhood to steal the sun from Celestia only to be struck with a regret-spell from Luna who explained it only works on ponies, therefore Twilight had a soul ?

From what I skimmed through, Twilight does go to Rarity to help with pest control in Chapter 2, but I didn't see macabre curtains of death in my skimming through of it.It was a Newspaper that seemingly starts her spiral. I know I read this and its sequel For Want of A Dawn way back when. (?related by same guy and diffidently some AU going on here but I don't know how related, I thought Sunset was a mostly stand alone story but this from hazy memory). It's now October, a favorite of many in art and fandom because of spooky  spooky theming. I will admit to having some slightly mixed feelings on Halloween (this part of the year is a fav on paper from sentimentality and high personal significance ) but I think my main gripe is how the stores stocked things in August. I do love comfy spooks and Nightmare Night themed things for sure.

Internet has been annoyingly intermittent after some flooding down (or up for many of you) in Texas, probably going to have someone look at it. It's an old style cable system connection and I suspect it's damaged. I would try to fix it myself (again, lol!) but have been having some of my aforementioned medical issues. Uh, I guess that brings to a close another life update!

Posting a Luna for Nightmare Night month. Two (three!), actually, one image and pixel art based on it. The pixel art was done by someone part of a discord  called ManePxls that is a faction on one of the pixel sites that is trying to replicate reddit's pixel space or whatever it was called (it ever so slightly annoys me that people think of reddit, and try to emulate, reddit, when this idea has been done before, anypony remember drawball?!) anyways, beside that, I do respect their pixel versions of other art and original pixel art they make when I see it.

Not to derail, but this is such an amazing image and I really love it. I guess it could be as simple as 'combining my two favorite things', but the details are just fantastic. For instance, Celestia's cutie mark as the symbol on the sail instead of the wind crest from the game: excellent. And from the upturned prow on the left and the rocky cliff-face on the right, I can also tell that this is right outside the Forsaken Fortress - when you sail there with the King of Red Lions in the game, iirc you arrive during the night, so this has to be sailing out of the Forsaken Fortress after that (you'd have to go back and then sail out because Valoo and the Rito save you and fly you out from Ganondorf's tower (a repurposed aft-end of a ship which I always liked to think was the back half of the ship that the prow sticking up out of the water that I mentioned earlier belonged to), but it could be structured differently in this 'version' of the story, or be around the endgame when you can teleport back to the surface from within Ganon's tower down beneath the waves in Hyrule, and it takes you to the Forsaken Fortress - either way it's a comfily pivotal moment in the game that's being alluded to!) which all comes together to imbue the image with a lot of quite specific nostalgia. It almost makes me wish for a more nautically-themed G6!

I respect little details like this as well. It is fun to convert elements (say a cutie mark) into another motiff or make them fit smoothly in something like that. 


I am going to say something funny: I have never played The Wind Waker. I have some memory seeing it as a kid on a Gamecube or something during a family visit but I have never played it and it's art style was and still is slightly offputting...

...but I also think these more wonky and cartoonish proportions have grown on me quite a lot!!! Pics related all from the artist dalapony and I like most of them, some of them I adore. I guess I have gone through in miniature what the repuation of that game went through as whole. (a albeit, I never hated Toon Link, I just had a slight "that looks weird" disinterest). Here:

It translates very well also, as in this specific instance, the King of Red Lions (I'll try and spoiler this) was formerly King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule, the last King of Hyrule before it sank beneath the waves, and as King he used the Wind Waker to control the winds, so if he was a pony it would be most appropriate for his cutie mark to be wind-related - and the sail in the game has a wind crest on it. Of course, the sail is bought from an Eskimo, so it's only related by chance, but nonetheless it fits.

Unfortunately with Windwaker, more than anything else in the world really, I'm totally unable to look at it with an objective eye: it was my first real gaming experience. Technically I played the PC demo for Lego Star Wars first, but then Dad bought a Gamecube from a friend along with some games. Our copy of Windwaker came with the Master Quest disk, so I guess Dad's friend must have pre-ordered Windwaker. So I did play Ocarina of Time too, but it didn't ever grab me like Windwaker did, I preferred to just watch my Dad play OoT. My favorite feature of the Master Quest disk was the trailers - the Windwaker trailer on it was and still is one of my favorite things ever:

In my mind this trailer was what introduced me to the game and made me really get into it - but there's no actual way for me to know if that's the case or not! All the memories are very blurry because I would have been four years old. Windwaker was my introduction to videogames, to fantasy as a genre, to a passion about history and sailing, and much more besides. I discussed back in the Season 9 discussion thread, years ago when the show ended, how I related to Twilight moving away from Ponyville and feeling upset about it because when I was nine years old, we moved, and I've still never really gotten over it. Our new house never, and still doesn't, feel like home, and neither does the apartment I've moved out into. I've been back to the village where I grew up, and of course, it's changed, it's no longer home either. Ironically enough, Windwaker itself is about this very theme. Ganondorf seeks to use the Triforce to unflood Hyrule, to bring it back. In the ending monologue, the King of Red Lions compares himself to Ganondorf, in terms of how neither of them could let go of Hyrule - but he chooses to destroy Hyrule and send Link and Tetra away to found their own land, a new land. So, home is not there if I go back. Nowhere on Earth feels like home. But when I play Windwaker, it feels like home. So, that's the game for me: it's the one and only home that I can actually go back to.

A few years later Dad got Twilight Princess, and that was his favorite Zelda. It might be my predisposition, but it could just as easily be the fact that Windwaker had a profound impact on who I am in general, but I find Twilight Princess depressing and dull, generally speaking. I don't think it's bad, but Hyrule in that game is not a place I'm all that interested in exploring, I don't like the people that inhabit it and I'm not motivated to save them. The Ooca city in that game is really the one part I like, and unlike the Hylians I actually like the Ooca so I want to help them. And fighting a dragon is always cool, of course. That's not to say it's a bad game, but that kind of 'look how grim and how dark I am' approach has remained a strong dislike of mine my whole life, and I first recall really feeling it towards Twilight Princess.

What can I say on sage that what hasn't been written by others wiser than me? Saging and the practice of  banish topics with holy herbs only seems to go so far, as engagement even without bumps can still drive more bumps. Though, on slower imageboards I wouldn't call them useless.

Ran into this when looking for something else. Unlike most animation memes or edits I run into these days, this one does actually have the desired effected of haunting (I guess most of those are trying to be cool). Uncertain how I feel on it though. Complicated emotions is better than annoyance.

What if the changelings won?

This wouldn't be a covert rebellion story, Star Wars style, but more like the movie Daybreakers, in which most of humanity had converted to sunlight-hating vampires, and the few humans were hunted primarily by the government exactly because there were too few of them to let the general public thoughtlessly tear apart the last of the breeding stock of the only food they could eat.

So, in this world the changelings could smell love from some distance, but not miles. And because they could also eat each other's love (but of course it was unsatisfying because they consumed their own generative output and emitted almost nothing) they changeling horde would set up towns where everyone stayed in-costume.
 They would have designated changelings pretending to be ponies, and others would file to pretend to be pretending to be ponies and try to infiltrate the town of innocents.
 Dropping your disguise in public would be the equivalent of shouting 'olly olly oxen-free' ; everyone would stop what they were doing to hear the words of the one with a problem, consider their response as a town, then kick them out of town to maintain a sense of propriety and mystery.

 Of course, occasionally a real pony would try to hide there, thinking it was mostly real ponies, or at least half of them which was why the changelings would stay in disguise. But one wrong trip to the marketplace in the evening, and there would be no more pony.
 Except this day, when our subject would sneak into what he thought for sure to be the real pony of the town, and ask how they had stayed hidden ... and after some embarrassed stalling the lone changeling, in their own home, would drop their disguise, or swap it to look like the real pony, and explain how this place worked.
 Then go on the adventure of trying to sneak out the pony whose natural love could be detected through walls from fifty feet away.
 And the changeling army marching through, no disguise of course, having heard stories of roaming food herds in the area.

That could be both needlessly convoluted or genius. There is a lot of potential there, say, ponies from the pony resistance infuriating or trying to travel through a town and have a physiological horror drama where you never quite know whom you can trust. They may have their own code words and crap, but it wouldn't matter at some point (I suppose that point even the Thing comes partly to mind). Did you have any characters or other AU elements in mind aside from the lose concept?

Plenty of opportunity for both Stockholm syndrome and Reverse Stockholm syndrome (or is it Lima syndrome now?).

I know this, lately my pony desires have centered on mystery. I want to make small mystery style stories but my craving is for larger ones. It's less defined that a specific AU idea but more of a desire of tone; some mix of haunting and /comfy/. It can be murder or whatever else.  Now, less pony related, I have been tinkering with the idea of a horror game where your being hunted by creepy divergent humans, with the plot twist being that the majority of humanity went on a very strange transhuman path and what is creepy and divergent to the humans of this setting is normal(ish) humans from a lost colony who were none too pleased  at new mainstream humanity's attempt at contacting and reincorporating them into galactic society. I only mention that as that is an almost an inverse of the Daybreakers plot.

Though admittedly it's kind of the inverse of that, with a seasoned resident of the town having ran into a pony very much not playing by the rules from expertise and their own mission.

Though not quite to the letter of the concept here. I don't know how well my writing is as I haven't written in awhile and this was written just as much as a distraction for myself. Certainly expect some spelling errors at least!

At least that is what sticks out to me on a somewhat less sleep deprived reread. I may or may not do another or mess around more, we shall see. It felt nice to write something again and did help me clear my mind a bit and it's fun to explore scenarios. As for my thought here of what I was going for, perhaps an examation of complicated relationships formed from such a pony smuggling enterprise, with some ponies actively working with this exploitive gambit to preserve their species Stockholm syndrome and reverse Stockholm syndrome! Though  if I do continue such a thing could go anyone or played more straight.
