> do you believe ISPs just give away customer information to anyone without a court order?
In many countries (especially in Europooristan and the yuukay), it is exceedingly easy to get ISPs to hand over customer data via a simplified court order. Copyright trolls do it all the time. No proof of any wrongdoing is required, only a simple formal request under the guise of some breach of contract. Doing so would not be outside what a schizo-rogue admin could do.
> and if that's the case what makes you trust a VPN over an ISP?
Be smart and choose a country as an exit node that requires formal proof of wrongdoing before handing over data and where such a procedure would require a considerable amount of effort. Select a VPN that resides in a jurisdiction which requires little to no logging. Lastly, if your threat model requires it: TOR.
