Grand champion Onosato is out for around a month with a rotator cuff injury, his stable announced Friday, while Ukrainian-born ozeki Aonishiki faces demotion back to sekiwake after hurting his left ankle while preparing for the 15-day meet at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
Mongolian-born Hoshoryu was beaten at the jump by veteran former ozeki Takayasu and immediately showed signs of injury to his right upper leg after being twisted to the clay with an overarm throw.
The two-time Emperor's Cup winner was helped into a wheelchair before being taken from the arena.
