As the name implies, its Alien + World Building. So there is a whole political and technological context. Its more like BSG / Caprica in the sense of being an "universe at scale", which I'm a fan of.
I don't think anyone cares about audiences/people in the current sci-fi production, its just wealthy people funding it for cultural reasons.
