Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - Thune from Senate floor ahead of Friday's FISA 702 surveillance authority deadline: We were well on our way to reauthorizing it, with Democrat and Republican lawmakers here in the Senate working on an agreement. And then, as has happened more than once this year, Democrats backed out. And now this critical tool is set to go dark on Friday. And what the consequences of that will be, we cannot predict."

Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - House Intel Ranking Member Himes in House floor debate yesterday opposing the 3-week FISA 702 surveillance authority extension past Friday's deadline to July 2: "There is a simple way out of this conundrum. The President can follow the law & allow the Principal Deputy DNI, a Senate-confirmed appointee of the President, to assume the role of acting DNI until a suitable nominee can be confirmed by the Senate. That is all that needs to happen, & none of us needs to swallow what has just happened." Aaron Lukas was confirmed by the Senate along party lines as Principal Deputy DNI in July.
