Freedom 250 @Freedom250 - Video: “We had to pay for freedom with the death of our only son.”
For Karen Vaughn, freedom used to be a concept — a moment in history when our forefathers threw off the chains of tyranny.
That changed on August 6th, the day her only son, Navy SEAL Aaron Carson Vaughn, was killed in action in Afghanistan when his helicopter was shot down. Thirty Americans died that day — the single greatest loss of Navy SEAL lives in history.
“That’s when freedom stopped being a concept. It became our entire life, divided into before and after.”
More than 1.3 million American families have paid that price. And as Karen reminds us, the fallen were never just units, brigades, or teams.
“Every single one of those souls was a person — surrounded by family and friends who loved them so much they couldn’t imagine life without them. And they died for us.”
This Memorial Day, we remember those who gave us our freedom. 🇺🇸

Freedom 250 @Freedom250 - Video: “The medal around my neck — it doesn’t belong to me. It belongs to all 89 guys.”
Medal of Honor recipient James “Doc” McCloughan was a combat medic in the Battle of Nui Yon Hill, May 1969 — 89 men of Charlie Company against roughly 2,700 NVA and Viet Cong.
He went out again and again to save the wounded, shielded by his machine gunners. As he puts it: “I wouldn’t be standing here, and it wouldn’t be around my neck, if it wasn’t for them.”
This Memorial Day, we remember that no one earns honor alone. 🇺🇸

"Those who died and gave up their life in war actually gave up two lives. They gave up the life that they were living when they were killed in action and they gave up the life that they never got to live."
