I have been under the weather these last few days (some odd cold virus is going around) and decided to visit a doctor so I could get an excuse to stay in bed. 4 minutes before the local clinic opens I put on my shoes and arrived just as they opened (on foot of course). Three nurses (I know them all) greeted me and the one other (elderly) patient who arrived a few seconds before me. After a minute or two of registration and identification the doctor saw me, and about five minutes later I had been examined and given a receipt to bring to the local apothecary (conveniently located next door to the clinic). The doctor is new to me, but I know her father well, whose practice she took over (last year) when he retired at 90 or so. In the neighborhood she doesn't introduce herself by name she just say's "I'm the daughter." That is her greeting. The clinic has a small rose garden in the back, which came in handy during covid because patients could be seen in the fresh air.
I spent in total less than 25 minutes and $14 (including four packets of one week worth of medicine), and this included a very nice morning walk in the brilliant summer weather.
I still haven't been inside a car in 2026, not counting maybe four short work related taxi trips (outside of Tokyo).
My neighborhood isn't perfect but it is quite human scaled. 36 million people live within an hour's train ride from me (not counting bullet or high speed trains).
