Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - House Transportation Cmte today marks up its 5-year surface transportation bill. WH is calling for the Railway Safety Act, co-sponsored by former Ohio Sens. (now VP) Vance & Brown in 2023 in response to the East Palestine, OH toxic train derailment with new train safety rules included, to be added as an amendment to the bill. Senate Transportation Cmte approved the Railway Safety Act 3 years ago this month 16-11, but no further action was taken by the Senate. Vance & Schmitt (MO) were the only Republicans to vote Yes.

Bipartisan rail safety legislation in response to the Norfolk Southern toxic train derailment in East Palestine,Ohio will be marked up by the Senate Transportation Cmte. next Wednesday,May 10. Cmte. heard from the bill's main sponsors Ohio Senators Brown (D) & Vance (R) in March.

Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - Senate today plans to work on the filibuster-proof GOP reconciliation bill to fund ICE & border patrol until the end of Trump’s term in 2029. A vote to proceed to the bill must first be held. If successful, up to 20 hours of debate equally divided will take place followed by an expected all-night vote-a-rama on amendments ending with final passage. Craig Caplan @CraigCaplan - Members will also consider legislation to locate the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on the National Mall with a ban on transgender exhibits included. Also a bill to codify into law a recent VA policy change that the dept. will no longer report veterans to the FBI’s national gun background check system (NICS) solely because they participate in the VA fiduciary program to help them with their VA benefits.
