In case you are not familiar with the effect, scintillation is what causes the stars and distant city lights to "twinkle" in the night sky. It is a beautiful effect when viewed, but when it happens to a radio signal, the result is disruptive. In the case of yesterday, over North America, the scintillation in the aurora was so strong that the Wide-Area Augmentation System for precision GPS use was affected enough to cause GPS degradation for commercial aircraft flying over Canada and the northern tier of U.S. states from about 22:00 UTC on May 15 to about 06:00 UTC on May 16. (Look for the light blue splotches that appear near the center of the animation.) These were not enough to disrupt precision GPS, but they were strong enough to degrade the vertical protection level from less than 20m to nearly 60m! That is enough to impact precision landings at airports. Pretty surprising for a short-lived G2 storm!
