Las Vegas became famous for quick weddings, while Nevada’s streamlined divorce process also made the state closely associated with both marriage and divorce tourism throughout the 20th century.
The broader regional pattern is also striking. Divorce rates tend to be lower across much of the Northeast and higher across parts of the South and Mountain West. Researchers usually link this to a mix of factors including age at marriage, education, income, religiosity and migration patterns. States where people marry younger generally tend to record higher divorce rates over time.
Nationally, both marriage and divorce rates have gradually declined in recent decades as Americans marry later on average and cohabitation has become more common.
