In 1860, the Mexican government, facing financial problems, announced that it was suspending payment of loans to the UK, Spain and France. The UK & Spain ended up making arrangements with Mexico but France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, opted to send troops with the larger goal of establishing a French colony in North America.
French troops set out from Vera Cruz in early 1862 with the goal of capturing Mexico City but were set back with a surprise loss at the Battle of Puebla at the hands of General Ignacio Zaragoza and a ragtag group of enlisted and volunteer troops. That battle occurred on May 5th (Cinco de Mayo).
Many Americans may be unaware that a war was being fought south of the border during our own Civil War. With our own problems at home, enforcing the Monroe Doctrine was not the highest priority for the Lincoln administration. In 1863, French forces were able to capture Mexico City which opened the door for Napoleon III to install Archduke Maximilian of Austria and Emperor of Mexico. Facing a guerrilla war that was supported by the U.S. after the Civil War, the French withdrew in 1867 with Maximilian being executed by firing squad.
