From the 1930s to the 1980s, Monsanto called Maury County home; and for long time residents, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who does not have a connection to that place. For many, it was a source of employment, but history has shown there was indeed a consequence of strings attached to same; namely through a legacy of, often fatal, impacts to health.
Tonight at 5:30 pm, the Maury County Regional Planning Commission will debate whether to approve a rezoning request for a resort-style community to be built on land that was once (and in my opinion should still be) subject to intense land use restrictions.
Monsanto’s history in Maury County was not just in the phosphate fertilizer business; as World War II and later conflicts ramped up, Maury County became the site where a bulk supply of the U.S. Military’s most lethal chemical weapons were made — long before the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created and prior to mandatory containment plans for the disposal of toxic hazardous waste.
Despite those facts, for those of us who seek to be long-term residents of this place, I suspect it will take a lifetime of stewardship to be certain the health and safety of our friends and neighbors is protected, now and for future generations. Greed is a powerful thing — and there will be many who are perfectly willing to send our loved ones to a cancer treatment facility one day in exchange for their making another dollar today.
It is not worth the risk — and it will never be worth the risk to develop a place where unequivocally there are environmental hazards, known and the unknown, that have the potential to cause harm to innocent people.
No amount of money will ever repay that moral debt.
