U.S. Naval Institute @NavalInstitute - #OTD in 1952, USS Wasp (CVA-18) collided with destroyer minesweeper USS Hobson (DMS-26) while conducting night flying operations. Wasp lost a 75-foot chunk of bow, but Hobson was split in two and went down with 176 men. It was the greatest loss of life on a Navy ship since WWII. The Wasp was repaired by being fitted with a bow removed from USS Hornet which was in NY Navy Yard undergoing modernization.
