Amazing Maps @amazingmap - The transformation was part of the Zuiderzee Works, one of the largest engineering projects ever carried out.
The key step was the Afsluitdijk, a 32 km long dam completed in 1932, which closed off the Zuiderzee from the North Sea and turned it into the freshwater IJsselmeer.
From there, huge sections of seabed were drained to create polders. The Noordoostpolder around Urk alone covers about 460 km², all reclaimed from what was once open water.
Once the water was pumped out, the land was stabilised and turned into farmland, permanently connecting former islands like Urk to the mainland.
