Amazing Maps @amazingmap - A magnitude 7.4–7.5 earthquake has struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, with its epicentre in the Pacific Ocean near Iwate.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning shortly after, with waves of up to 3 metres expected along parts of the northern coast, including Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido.
The quake was relatively shallow, around 10 km deep, which increases the likelihood of seafloor movement and tsunami generation.
Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. When one plate suddenly shifts beneath another, it can displace large volumes of water, generating tsunami waves that travel rapidly across the ocean.
Warnings are issued quickly because tsunamis can arrive within minutes along nearby coastlines, and waves often come in multiple surges rather than a single impact.

Amazing Maps @amazingmap - The quake struck at around 07:53 GMT (16:53 local time) off Japan’s northeast coast near the Sanriku region.
Tsunami warnings remain in place for Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido, with advisories extending further south along the Pacific coast.
Initial waves have already been recorded, but authorities are warning that larger waves can arrive later and in multiple surges, which is when the greatest risk typically occurs.
Evacuations have been ordered in low-lying coastal areas, with transport disruptions reported and safety checks underway at key infrastructure.
Officials are continuing to monitor wave heights and update warnings as more data comes in.
