According to The Guardian, after the death of Escobar, the animals reproduced rapidly, reaching a population of around 200.
Officials consider them a dangerous invasive species and plan to kill about 80 of them, while sterilizing the rest and relocating some to zoos.
Local residents oppose the plan, arguing that the hippos have become a symbol of the region and attract tourists.
