Amazing Maps @amazingmap - New York City has no single official list of neighborhoods, but most commonly cited estimates place the number at over 200.
Manhattan alone contains dozens of named areas within just 59 km², including smaller neighborhoods like NoLIta, SoHo, and the Lower East Side sitting directly next to each other. Brooklyn and Queens are even more complex, with large historic districts like Flatbush or Astoria containing smaller, locally recognised sections.
Many of these names developed at different times. Some reflect early Dutch and English settlements, others come from 19th and 20th century immigration, and some, like DUMBO or NoMad, are much more recent and linked to redevelopment and branding.
The result is a city where neighborhood identity is widely used and recognised, even though the number, size, and exact boundaries vary depending on who is defining them.
