Kharg Island is just 20 km², and most people have never heard of it. But it sits at the centre of Iran’s oil exports.
Roughly 85–95% of the country’s crude leaves from this single island, making it one of the most concentrated and strategically important energy hubs in the world.
That’s why it has become a focus in the current conflict. The United States has carried out strikes on Kharg Island, targeting military infrastructure such as air defences while avoiding oil facilities.
That distinction matters. Hitting the export terminals would have immediate consequences for global oil supply, so for now, the most critical infrastructure remains intact.
If that changes, the impact wouldn’t stay regional, it would be felt across global energy markets almost immediately.
