Scott Mechkowski @ScottMechkowski - English is the language of American citizenship and self-government. This NJ bill isn't 'voter empowerment' it's pandering that weakens assimilation.

Calling this piece "journalism" is a joke it's pure activist spin from Isabelle Muhlbauer. Her real job at LatinoJustice PRLDEF is to travel from state to state lobbying for these exact kinds of bills. She doesn't report the news; she pushes an agenda to create "rights violations" out of thin air so politicians will pass more mandates.
Here's the part nobody wants to say out loud: To become a U.S. citizen and get the right to vote, you have to pass a basic English reading, writing, and civics test. (The only real exceptions are for folks who are already elderly after living here for decades.) You stand up and swear an oath to the Constitution in a country where the laws, the debates, the ballots, and the entire system run in English. Period
If someone can't handle the language of the nation they chose to join, that's not "voter suppression." That's on them and it's a straight-up failure of assimilation.
New Jersey already follows federal rules and provides Spanish materials where the numbers actually justify it. This John R. Lewis Voter Empowerment Act isn't about fixing some massive denial of rights. It's about forcing every town and county to print ballots, guides, and hire interpreters in who knows how-many languages, lowering the bar even further, and sticking taxpayers with the bill.
That doesn't create equity. It creates chaos, higher costs, and a real risk of bad translations screwing up elections worse than any "barrier" it claims to solve. Worse, it sends a clear message: Don't bother learning English. We'll bend over backward forever.
Voting isn't a participation trophy. It's for citizens who can actually participate in self-government using the shared language of this country. If people who've been here for years still can't navigate a ballot, maybe we should tighten citizenship standards instead of dumbing down everything else.
This bill isn't compassion it's cynical pandering dressed up as justice. It weakens the common foundation that keeps a diverse country from falling apart. Pass it if you want, but stop pretending it's about protecting fundamental rights. It's about subsidizing people who never fully joined the society they're voting in.
