Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) was launched on April 12, 1981, from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Pres. Reagan Address on 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger Explosion. On January 28th, 1986, President Reagan addressed the nation following the loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger. Earlier that day, the Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all seven crew members.
