Patients reported muscle pain, weakness, fatigue that didn't improve with rest. Some developed a condition where muscle tissue broke down and released proteins into the bloodstream.
Cognitive complaints followed. Memory problems. A fog that descended after starting the medication.
Studies linked long-term use to elevated risk of type 2 diabetes: the very condition the drug was meant to prevent downstream.
A 2012 FDA review confirmed the diabetes and cognitive risks. The label was updated.
The drug was not withdrawn. It was prescribed more widely after the label change than before.
Patients continued to report the same symptoms and be told they were coincidental.
The drug is safe and effective.
