The Forgotten South @forgotten_south - Video: In a quiet, shaded lot tucked away in Jacksonville, Florida, a mysterious grave stands, surrounded by live oaks and festoons of Spanish moss.
As I walked through Mandarin Cemetery last week, this grave caught my eye. I read the inscription:
"In memory of George S. Mott,
son of Jacob C. and Mary C. Mott
of the state and city of New York,
shot by the Indians,
May 18, 1836,
aged 30 years.
That the perpetrators of this cruel act
may be forgiven
is the prayer of his afflicted
and ever sorrowing mother."
Well, you've got my attention.
So I went looking for more information about George's story, piecing together what I could from historical records and local legend.
George was born in New York in 1806. As a young man, he moved south to Florida, where he established a plantation along the St. Johns River near present-day Jacksonville.
Florida was still very much a frontier at the time. After Spain ceded the territory to the United States in 1821, small settlements began to appear along the river, surrounded by wilderness, citrus groves, and growing tensions during the Seminole Wars.
In July of 1830, the first post office was established here, and the community took the name Mandarin, inspired by the Mandarin orange.
According to local accounts, George traded with nearby Seminole communities. During this time, legend says he fell in love with a young Indigenous woman named Waha, the daughter of a chief, and married her in a tribal ceremony.
But George had neglected to mention that he already had a wife and several children living in New York.
The details of the story vary from this point. Some say he was warned by the tribe to leave, while others say he left for a time to visit his family in the North. In either case, he was exposed as a bigamist.
