Melissa Hallman @dotconnectinga - BREAKING: The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee advanced Sen. Markwayne Mullins nomination to become Homeland Security secretary in an 8-7 party-line vote today.
Chairman Rand Paul (R-Ky.) voted no, while Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) voted yes.
The vote followed a contentious March 18 confirmation hearing where Paul confronted Mullin over past comments, including Mullins town hall remark calling Paul a freakin snake and references to an assault on Paul that left him with broken ribs.
Paul challenged Mullin on temperament and trustworthiness for the role.
Democrats raised similar concerns about Mullins suitability and experience.
The nomination now heads to the full Senate floor for a vote; Mullin is positioned to replace Kristi Noem, who is stepping down at months end.
His testimony did not shift the ongoing DHS shutdown impasse, now in its second month, as Democrats hold firm on demands for statutory changes to ICE and Border Patrol.

Melissa Hallman @dotconnectinga - NEW: Chief U.S. District Judge James Boasberg issued a temporary 120-day standing order on March 4, 2026, requiring written notification to the duty magistrate judge whenever a grand jury declines to indict in a GJO investigation. Notifications will be kept confidential in the Clerks Office while the court considers making the rule permanent.
The order follows a failed February 2026 attempt by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro to secure federal indictments against six Democratic lawmakers — Reps. Jason Crow, Maggie Goodlander, Chris Deluzio, and Chrissy Houlahan, along with Sens. Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin — over a November 2025 video encouraging military and intelligence personnel to refuse unlawful orders.
President Trump had labeled the group the seditious six and pushed for prosecution, but the grand jury declined. Pirro has since called Boasberg an activist judge, a tension that has extended to other disputes, including Federal Reserve subpoenas.
