Everyone reacted differently but you can't say that "no one on earth would sit there like that" because pretty much everyone did.
I would have replied directly to your post but you limited responses so I'll give you mine here. The one emotion that was in short supply that day was panic.
Anger, disbelief, sorrow, worry, shock, prayer, and many others manifested themselves but widespread panic did not.
Unlike those behind the stage who could see the President, those of us in front could not. I actually stood to try and get a better idea of his condition. Once I realized I still couldn't see anything I ducked down again to get my camera.
I understand that many don't understand the crowds reaction. Some have even claimed it as proof that the event was staged (It was not). The crowd did not panic, the crowd did not run, but to attack the crowd for not panicking is folly.
