Thomas Thompson, 73, was sent to prison in 2015 after declining to tell a federal judge, his attorneys and investors where he stored a collection of gold coins and bars recovered from the S.S. Central America, according to local outlet The Columbus Dispatch.
The S.S. Central America, known as the “Ship of Gold,” sank in a hurricane in 1857 while carrying gold from the California Gold Rush, per the Associated Press. Thompson located the wreck in 1988 during an expedition backed by about 160 investors, many from Ohio, The Columbus Dispatch reported.
Investors sued Thompson in 2005, alleging he sold approximately $50 million in gold without compensating them.
In addition to his prison term, Thompson was ordered to pay a daily fine of $1,000 while incarcerated, along with additional financial penalties totaling more than $3.5 million, The Columbus Dispatch reported.
Thompson has maintained that some coins were transferred to a trust in Belize and that proceeds from earlier sales were used to pay legal and financial obligations, according to the AP. He also claimed he did not know the location of the remaining gold.
