Old Submariner @USN_Submariner - It s been a week since an American submarine sank an enemy warship with a torpedo, but when was the last time one sank a commercial freighter with a torpedo? It was actually OTD in 1999 and also a Los Angeles-class submarine. USS Bremerton (SSN-698) sank M/V New Carissa off the Coast of Oregon, firing a Mark 48 ADCAP from 8,000 yards.
Dubbed “The Ship That Would Not Die”, New Carissa had plagued the coast for over a month, leaking fuel oil. Prior attempts included an EOD team using 400lbs of high explosives & 69 point-detonating 5-inch, 54-caliber projectiles from USS David R. Ray (DD-971). The ADCAP of course finished the job as they always do.

Patrick Fox @RealCynicalFox - The average E-3 is making just under $3200/month in base pay. Hostile fire pay is another $225/month. Additional pay and allowances in a war zone might kick them up to $45-50k a year if they’re drawing family sep, etc. Which translates to between 70-75% of the individual US average personal income of $66,662/year, 56-62% of the average US household income of $80,620/year.
In exchange they are on call 24/7 for the duration of their deployment and (depending on military occupation) routinely working 60-80+ hours a week in highly dangerous conditions that put life, limb, and mental health in jeopardy.
Given what we expect of these men and women, I hardly think a special meal every week or so - many years ago it was every Friday when I was deployed- is an extravagance.
