Instead we usually drove to St. Louis for long weekends to stay at the Chase Park Plaza where the LA Dodgers were staying when they played the Cards, so my brother Rush could be close to and talk to Dodgers players. He loved the Dodgers, especially Maury Wills, the record holding base stealer at the time. We were such groupies, but I was a Cards fan so I wasn't as enamored as Rush was with the Dodgers, LOL.
The only time we went on a real vacation we spent half the week in DC and saw all the sites -- my dad, as you might expect, was a super-patriot (a WWII fighter pilot), and the other half in Panama City, Florida. I can't believe how white the beach was.
I know this trip had to have been in 1962 because for some weird reason I remember that my two favorite songs during that trip were Breaking Up is Hard to Do, by Neil Sedaka, and The Locomotion by Little Eva and I just looked it up and they were both released in 1962. I would have been 9 that summer and Rush would have been 11. I have no idea why I remember what my favorite songs were and especially why I remember hearing them in Florida on that trip. But I do, distinctly. I can't remember what Rush's favorite songs were that year but I can tell you he was already aspiring to be a radio DJ at the time.
The reason I bring this up at all is because Neil Sedaka just died and it brought back memories. He was a great talent. #RIP
