Statue of Civil Rights Activist Barbara Rose Johns Unveiled at U.S. Capitol. Congressional leaders unveiled a new statue of civil rights activist Barbara Rose Johns, replacing the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in the U.S. Capitol. Johns is known for leading a student walkout in 1951 to protest the poor conditions at her Virginia school at the age of 16. This walkout became one of the five cases included in the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which declared school segregation unconstitutional.
