A randomized trial finds blocking mobile internet improved mental health MORE than antidepressants.
Here’s what they found ⬇
A month-long randomized controlled trial (n=467 iPhone users in the U.S. + Canada) used an app to block ALL mobile internet (WiFi + cellular data) for 14 days—while still allowing calls + texts and internet on laptops/desktops.
Results after just 2 weeks:
- Sustained attention improved (objectively measured)
- Mental health improved (depression/anxiety composite)
- Subjective well-being increased (life satisfaction + affect)
- 91% of participants improved in at least one outcome
Screen time was CUT in half:
314 minutes/day → 161 minutes/day
With mobile internet blocked, participants spent more time in the real world:
- In-person social connection
- Exercise
- Nature
- Reading / hobbies
- Sleep
The takeaway is simple:
Unplug for 14 days.
