Mayor Karen Bass @MayorOfLA - Federal agents shot and killed another U.S. citizen on the streets of an American city this morning – for the second time this month alone.

We cannot become numb to this, to the deaths of Keith Porter Jr. in Los Angeles, Nicole Good, and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis at the hands of heavily armed and poorly trained ICE agents. When basic rights are violated in one community, the damage does not stay contained; it erodes safety and justice for all of us.

The people killed were members of our communities. Alex Pretti was a Registered Nurse, a profession defined by care, service, and the preservation of life. As someone who spent years as a Nurse and Physician Assistant, I know what it means to show up for people in their most vulnerable moments.

Just hours ago, ICE conducted raids in South L.A., taking away working Angelenos, tearing families apart. The threat to our communities by ICE is current, and it is ongoing.

This continued federal escalation and intentional campaign of chaos and violence by our own government is a threat to every American. It’s a complete contradiction to the founding principles of this country, 250 years after it was formed. We must hold this administration accountable and demand that these massive and unnecessary deployments of ICE agents into our cities stop now.

To every Angeleno: you have the right to peacefully organize and defiantly resist. Protest is powerful, and that is why it is being targeted. We cannot play into this administration’s hands and give them an opportunity to militarize our streets.
