Sunny @sunnyright - As pertains to Israel, Bill Clinton's experiences and development on the issue is a prominent example.
He was really, deeply on board with a two-state solution and helping the Palestinians and getting Israel to make major concessions.
And then after years of trying, and historic efforts to change things up, he finally realized that Palestinian leaders simply couldn't take "yes" for an answer -- that it was never good enough, that Arafat wasn't actually committed to peace, that as much as Clinton got Israel to offer, Palestinian leaders didn't want it because they preferred the generational violence.
People with more experience on the issue could've told him that from the start and were appropriately cynical. But he was going to change the world and everyone who came before was just a fool or unwilling to try peace or whatever. Until the realization hits that oh shit there's a reason this issue remained an issue despite apparently obvious answers.
