In the summer of 1969, Niagara Falls briefly revealed a sight unseen since the last Ice Age. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers undertook a major effort to halt the flow over the American Falls, the smaller of the two main cataracts. Engineers constructed a massive cofferdam upstream using 1,200 feet of steel and nearly 30,000 tons of rock. On June 12, the water was diverted into the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, leaving the American Falls dry.
The purpose was scientific and practical. For decades, geologists and engineers had been concerned about the rapid erosion and heavy buildup of talus — the huge mound of broken rock accumulating at the base. If left unchecked, the American Falls risked losing its iconic vertical drop. Once the water stopped, crews descended into the exposed gorge to remove debris, survey long-term erosion, and install stabilization anchors in the cliff face. The dry riverbed revealed coins, lost artifacts, and even two human skeletons, reminders of the falls’ long and sometimes tragic history.
By November, the Corps concluded that removing the talus would be too costly and risk damaging the natural character of the falls. The cofferdam was removed and water returned, restoring the familiar roar.
During the dewatering, more than 20,000 tourists a day traveled to the site to witness the once-in-a-lifetime sight of a silent Niagara Falls — police had to manage traffic jams created by people trying to see the dry cliff.
