The Forgotten South @forgotten_south - Situated deep in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park of Tennessee sits the Ephraim Bales Cabin, built in the 1890s.
It was home to Ephraim Bales, his wife, and their eight children and according to the family history, all 10 of them lived in this modest, dogtrot style cabin at one time.
A dogtrot cabin consists of two log structures set side by side with an open passageway between them, all under a single roof. The central breezeway served many purposes: a shaded sitting area, a workspace during storms, and a natural cooling system during hot mountain summers. One cabin functioned as the main living space, while the other served as the kitchen.
The Bales family lived here from about 1890 until 1930, when the federal government purchased the land for what would become Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Besides this cabin, several outbuildings still stand today, including the original corn crib, barn, and pig pen. https://x.com/forgotten_south/status/2010487240779083801
The Forgotten South @forgotten_south - Horn Creek Baptist Church is one of the oldest Baptist congregations in South Carolina’s Upcountry, standing here since the late 18th century.
The congregation was organized in 1768, a time of great religious revival in the American backcountry, and the church was formally incorporated in 1790, making it one of the earliest Baptist meeting houses in the region.
This simple one-room meeting house reflects the faith and frugality of the early settlers, and a door behind the pulpit once led worshippers down to Horn Creek for baptisms.
The area around the church also saw action during the Revolutionary War, when Patriot forces clashed with Loyalist troops nearby. https://x.com/forgotten_south/status/2010364360573456861
