The Forgotten South @forgotten_south - This is perhaps one of the most fascinating cemeteries I’ve ever had the chance to visit. And it only took a 4-mile hike up a mountain to get there!
Located deep in the Great Smoky Mountains, this sacred burial ground marks the place where the Maddron (sometimes spelled Madron) family rests. There are many stones here, although most of them are simple fieldstones that aren’t inscribed, or whose inscriptions have long since faded with time.
Except for this one, carved in 1877. This type of marker is known as a vernacular stone, meaning it was carved by someone who wasn’t a professional stonecutter, but likely a family member or loved one of the deceased.
And although these stones lack the polish and decorative detail of professionally carved markers, I think they are often more charming and meaningful, precisely because they were shaped by the hands of someone who knew and loved the person they were honoring.
