I worked in Congress for five years, eventually serving as Sen. Mike Lee’s legislative director. Something you learn early on the hill is that most staff and members don’t ever read these bills and the ones that do and raise concern are told to shut up and get in line.
Members and staff who don’t listen either face ostracism or public lashings in front of their peers.
Some people eventually break down because it’s tough to handle for a while, few have the willpower to not care (I never did and made a career out of not caring and giving people hell over this kind of stuff).
Point is: Congress sucks because the staff and Members largely suck. Until people grow a spine and decide to do the jobs they have the status quo will continue and the American people will suffer.
