When I lived in the US, I once had dinner with several very well off immigrants from Shanghai who came through EB5. Over wine, they proudly shared their favorite American shopping hack.
They returned their used luggage to Costco as if it were defective merchandise.
Not broken.
Not damaged.
Just used. By them.
They laughed about how generous the return policy was and how much they loved shopping there because of it.
They were not embarrassed.
They were proud.
That moment explained more about Chinese values than any macro chart ever could.
Reminds me of how China operates in the global trade system.
