House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries proposed the event to examine threats to elections from the Trump administration, highlight pardons of Jan. 6 participants, and feature testimonies from affected members. 
Jeffries accused Republicans of attempting to rewrite the riot’s history. The original committee, formed post-riot with two Republican members, held 2022 hearings and issued criminal referrals against President Trump that were not pursued.
