Raised in a family of farmers, she faced early hardship when her mother died when she was just four years old. With her father away fighting in World War I, Maria was cared for by two elderly unmarried aunts, who instilled in her a deep faith and simplicity.
From a young age, Maria felt a strong calling to religious life. She spent time in various places, including Gardone Riviera from 1940, seeking spiritual guidance. In 1948, influenced by her confessor, she encountered the Sisters of Mercy (Suore Misericordiose) in Atella, near Potenza. Inspired by their charism of merciful service, she persistently sought admission. On December 8, 1949, she received the habit in the Mother Church of Rionero in Vulture, taking the name Sister Maria Santina.
As a professed sister in the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy, Sister Maria Santina lived a life of complete self-forgetfulness. She oriented everything toward God's greater glory and the salvation of souls, embodying merciful love through contemplation and action. Her writings reflect this core inspiration: an unwavering commitment to divine mercy expressed in prayer and service to others.
Sister Maria Santina died on December 22, 1956, in Borgo d'Ale, at the age of 42. Her reputation for holiness grew steadily after her death. On June 11, 2019, Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing her heroic virtues, declaring her Venerable. This step acknowledges that she practiced the theological and cardinal virtues to a heroic degree, advancing her cause toward possible beatification.
