December 8, 1941- the strategically vital atoll of Wake Island came under attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy, marking the beginning of a fierce and desperate defense.
In the first few days, the outnumbered defenders managed to inflict significant damage on the invading fleet, even sinking several enemy warships and forcing the Japanese to regroup. For two weeks, a small but determined force of U.S. Marines, Sailors, and civilian contractors would fight against overwhelming odds, delaying the Japanese advance and inspiring a nation.
Wake Island was eventually recaptured by U.S. forces in 1945, and its defense continues to serve as a powerful symbol of American resilience and determination in the face of adversity during World War II.
