Landmark Cases: Supreme Court Landmark Case Baker v. Carr
Theodore Olson and Douglas Smith talked about the 1962 Supreme Court case Baker v. Carr, in which the court ruled that the drawing of election districts was a constitutional rather than a political question and could therefore be considered by the federal courts. Chief Justice Earl Warren called this "the most important case of my tenure on the court." The guests also responded to viewer questions and comments. Video clips were shown of Chief Justice Earl Warren being interviewed in 1969; live scenes of the U.S. Supreme Court building the night before another redistricting case; the oral arguments in the case; Abraham Sofaer talking about the relationship between Chief Justice Warren and Justice Brennan; the justices' conference room from the documentary The Supreme Court: Home to America's Highest Court; and Ryan Reft showing conference notes from the case.
