Terry Applegate @CharliesWhiskey - On 1 December 1777, Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, a Prussian military officer, arrives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with his Italian greyhound, Azor, to offer his services to the Continental Congress.
Upon landing, Steuben and his party were nearly arrested because they had mistakenly outfitted themselves in red uniforms, leading locals to believe they were British officers.
Steuben would go on to Valley Forge later that winter to drill Washington’s ragged troops. His training manual and discipline transformed the Continental Army into a professional fighting force capable of standing up to the British regulars. In May of 1778 he was appointed787 inspector general of the Continental Army with the rank of major general.
