I am reminded that even though rural America makes up just 17% of our population, 44% of those who serve come from rural communities. From small towns and backroads, from farms and fields, they step forward — not for fame, but for duty, for neighbor, and for home.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote of another generation of citizen-soldiers:
“Here once the embattled farmers stood, and fired the shot heard round the world.”
At our nation’s birth, it was farmers and blacksmiths, carpenters and clerks who took up arms against the might of empire. That shot was more than a musket’s report — it was the sound of ordinary people shaping the destiny of a free nation.
That spirit still echoes — in the barns and valleys, in the main streets and mountain towns, where courage and country mean everything.
To every veteran — thank you for answering the call, for carrying the weight of freedom, and for continuing in our nation’s tradition of service. All we have is owed to you!
