Michael DiMercurio @MikeyDiMercurio - So it’s 1779, and this absolute lunatic named John Paul Jones decides he hasn’t pissed off the British Navy enough.
He’s sailing a busted old French ship called the Bonhomme Richard which roughly translates to “Good Ol’ Dick.”
He runs into the HMS Serapis, a proper British warship with more guns, better sailors, and way fewer holes in it.
Naturally, Jones says, “Party time.”
The battle starts and immediately turns into a floating dumpster fire. Cannons explode, masts collapse, the decks are a blender of smoke and splinters.
At one point, a cannonball tears straight through the hull and everyone assumes Jones is done for.
The British captain yells across the water, “Have you struck your colors, you Colonist swine?”
That’s polite Royal Navy talk for “Are you ready to quit, mate?”
And Jones, covered in blood, gunpowder, and full of piss and vinegar yells back:
“I have not yet begun to fight!”
Then he proceeds to board the Serapis, hand-to-hand, in what can only be described as an 18th-century bar fight with cutlasses.
By the end, the Bonhomme Richard is sinking, half the crew’s dead, and Jones is standing on the Serapis like, “Nice ride. It’d be a shame if it were American.”
John Paul Jones and his Marines didn’t just refuse to surrender, they stole the enemy’s ride home.
