Rep. Mike Collins @RepMikeCollins - On this day in history in 1955, a bomb aboard United Airlines Flight 629 killed 44 people.
The flight took off from Denver, bound for Portland. Just 11 minutes into the flight, the plane crashed near Longmont, killing all 39 passengers and five crew members. Initial investigations revealed signs of an explosion.
It became clear that the crash was not due to mechanical failure or pilot error. The FBI was called in to pursue a criminal investigation. Investigators found that passenger Daisie E. King had been carrying newspaper clippings concerning her son, Jack Gilbert Graham, who had a criminal history and was on a local most-wanted list. Notably, Graham was the beneficiary of at least $37,500 in life insurance policies on his mother, and there were reports of strained relations between them.
As the investigation deepened, FBI agents discovered detonating wire at Graham's residence. This prompted further interrogation, during which Graham confessed to his heinous act: he had constructed a homemade bomb using 25 sticks of dynamite, hidden it in his mother’s luggage, and set it to explode after a timed delay, having purchased a 60-minute timing device shortly before the flight.
Ultimately, he was found guilty and sentenced to death, with his execution taking place in January 1957.
One lingering question about the case was why Graham was only charged with the murder of his mother despite the loss of 44 lives. Legal experts noted that this strategy was likely the most straightforward route to secure a death penalty conviction, as specific laws governing airline bombings had yet to be established.

Rep. Ron Estes @RepRonEstes - Today is the day thousands of Kansans lose their SNAP benefits because Chuck Schumer refuses to open the government and pass a clean funding bill.
This is unfair to my constituents and their fellow Americans who need this assistance.
