DataRepublican (small r) @DataRepublican - THREAD: John Bolton: The Man Who Never Saw a War He Didn’t Like
John Bolton got his start as Reagan's assistant administrator of USAID - a time when USAID was dramatically re-transformed from Nixon-era "New Directions" third-world assistance to being contingent on "Democracy & Governance" Cold War goals.
This thread unpacks:
1 His obsession with staying in wars forever
2 How his NGO & think-tank gigs kept him flush with hawkish donors
3 His time in the Trump administration and why his home got searched
As always, patience as I pull this together.

DataRepublican (small r) @DataRepublican - A John Bolton story:
In March 2002, José Bustani, head of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, was pushing Iraq to rejoin the Chemical Weapons Convention and let inspectors in.
That effort could have undercut the case for war.
According to Bustani, Bolton told him:
“You have 24 hours to leave the organization… We know where your kids live.”
Weeks later, under U.S. pressure and threats to pull funding, the OPCW voted 47–3 (with 43 abstentions) to remove Bustani.
The Iraq War followed: 200,000 dead, $750 billion spent, over a million displaced.

Debra Lea @thedebralea - GUYS if I vote for Sliwa it’s not going to make Mamdani win.
PEOPLE VOTING FOR MAMDANI WILL MAKE HIM WIN!
Don’t blame me for having a moral backbone. Blame New Yorkers for giving us these candidates. I’ve begged to hit the reset button.
Voting. For. Sliwa.

Debra Lea @thedebralea - @CurtisSliwa is the ONLY qualified candidate on this stage. He is brilliant, a true New Yorker, and coming off very likable this far.
