The ship and all her passengers are thoroughly-searched and extra fire drills are held, but the threat turns out to be a hoax.

He miraculously survives, albeit with critical injuries and paralyzed from the waist down.
He begins to drown, but a sea lion swims up beneath him and holds his body afloat until a Coast Guard boat comes and plucks him from the water.
Hines is now recovering in the hospital.
