MOMof DataRepublican @data_republican - In the 70s my husband was stationed at the Pentagon. We lived in No Virginia, and he commuted in everyday to work. The military was so despised and vilified following the VietNam War that he was not allowed to wear his uniform. He had to wear a sports coat and tie to work to keep a low profile and not antagonize the anti war crowd.
Guess what changed it? When President Reagan was first elected, he was introduced to a general in a coat and tie, and Reagan said, "How would I know you are general if you're not wearing a uniform?" The next day the order was given to report in uniform.
It only takes one sane president to make a difference, but make no mistake, the military was hated.
